Light Sport Pilot Certificate (SPL)

This is a standalone course, designed to take a non-pilot from zero time to the Sport Pilot Certificate.  The FAA requires a minimum of 20 flight hours and the AFTC course actually includes 25 hours.  It normally takes 2 months to complete. 

It includes: preflight preparation, preflight procedures, airport operations, takeoffs, landings, and go-arounds, performance maneuvers, ground reference maneuvers, weather, navigation, slow flight and stalls, emergency operations, postflight procedures, principles of aerodynamics, aircraft powerplants, aircraft systems, and aeronautical decision making.

Prerequisites: 

  • Be at least 17 years old.
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Hold at least a third class medical, or hold a current and valid U.S. driver’s license.
